Biologically Active Compost
This compost is alive! We carefully craft this small batch compost to ensure it has the full suite of beneficial micro-organisms. These microbes help protect your soil against pests and disease as well as kick start nutrient cycling within the soil.
Like all living things, this compost needs air and water to thrive. Please ensure the microbes stay moist at all times! Spritzing with a water bottle works great.
Why it works
We source only the highest quality materials for each batch of compost. By using these ingredients and following a strict watering and heating cycle, we ensure our compost is packed full of all the components of the Soil Food Web. This process also ensures there are no weed seeds or pathogens present in the compost.
The Soil Food Web is what we find in all virgin soils. It's Mother Nature's answer to resilience against pests and disease, while also providing all the right nutrients to the right plants.
Every batch of our compost is assessed using direct microscopy to ensure all the components of the Soil Food Web are present.
How to Use
Top Dress: Apply a thin layer of compost around your plant base and then cover the compost with a thin layer of mulch (think leaves or straw). Water in.
Compost Extract: Take approximately 1 pound of compost in a mesh bag (like a paint strainer bag from the hardware store) and spray with the shower setting on your garden hose, over a bucket. The water should be a dark brown color. Spray until you no longer see the color. Gently squeeze compost bag over your bucket to get every last drop of microbe goodness into your extract. Immediately apply liquid extract using a watering can.
Seed Starts: Directly sow seedlings into compost.
House Plants: A small amount can be added to potting soil when planting house plants. Note: avoid overwatering. Compost enables your potted plant to hold moisture longer than usual!
Backyard Compost Starter: Add to your backyard compost piles. Whether you have a vermicompost bin or a household/yard waste compost pile, this will kick start your compost.
Suggested Use
This compost goes much further when used as an extract - as little as five pounds of compost can cover an entire acre. Extracts can be used on the soil surface, directly onto plants and plant leaves, on lawns, or in your house plants. Anywhere you want to improve your soils, an extract can safely be applied.
Once an extract is made, the remaining compost can be added to a home compost bin, worm bin or simply added to your garden/indoor plant.
